Bee A Reader!

Increasing access to language and literature in underprivileged communities across the Western Cape, South Africa.

GOAL: 5 Free Libraries by June, 2026

What is a Little Bee Library?

Little Bee Libraries are free-standing, cabinet-style bookshelves—- each hand-built and uniquely painted by children from local primary schools. These vibrant free libraries are stocked with books for all ages and placed in safe areas (e.g. outside of schools, hospitals, churches, nonprofits) in communities where access to literary materials is limited. Libraries will be restocked regularly, but visitors are encouraged leave a book behind for a future reader when they take a book!

Empowering Literacy Together

“Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine worker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.”

--Nelson Mandela

Literacy for All

“I always say I was raised in a prison. But I learned to read in that prison. And reading set me free.”

“People love to say, ‘Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime.’ What they don’t say is: and it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod.”

--Trevor Noah
